The Quoc Show Avatar

Notes

It’s been a fantastic Valentine’s Day so far and I’m not done sharing the love. It has been awhile but here’s a new qTunes mix featuring all female vocals across a wide range of genres. Some new songs and some over the past year that may have gone un-noticed. Here’s the tracklist and some of my comments below. Let me know if you dig!
Where Dem Girls At?
Sleigh Bells - Comeback KidQ: I’ve been hooked on this band ever since the single “Crown on the Ground” Something about the loud, crunchy guitars offset with the melodies of a female vocal
Sleeper Agent - Get it DaddyQ: Very young band. I caught wind of them over the summer and saw them live on the Weezer Cruise. Lots of potential.
Frankie Rose - Night Swim
Ladyhawke - Black White & BlueQ: I’m obsessed with her last self-titled album. Great 80’s synth-rock influenced sound
The Knocks - Midnight City ft Mandy Lee (M83 cover)Q: I heard of these guys from a remix of the Passion Pit song Sleepyhead. Saw them live on the Weezer cruise and now I’m hooked
The Jane Doze - Young Hearts Wanna Beat On Their OwnQ: My favorite mash-up DJ duo presently. Mix of Naked and Famous, Robyn, Katy Perry, Will.I.Am. and the late, great Whitney Houston
Madonna - Give Me All Your Luvin’ (LMFAO remix)Q: Didn’t care much for the original but I really like the LMFAO remix
Nicki Minaj - StarshipsQ: I’m mixed on her hardcore rappings songs as her alter ego but I love songs where she sings hooks over an electro-beat
David Guetta - Titanium ft SiaQ: Saw Guetta live in Atlantic City recently and this song was phenomenol
MNDR - #1 in HeavenQ: Good beat, I think MNDR will have a big 2012 as long as people don’t mistake her for Santigold
The Ting Tings - Soul KillingQ: Been awhile since we’ve heard new Ting Tings but they have new album. This song actually samples a creaky rocking chair but has bouncy guitars reminiscent of old school No Doubt
M.I.A. - Bad Girls
Santigold - Big Mouth
Estelle - Pretty Please (Love Me) ft Cee Lo GreenQ: I don’t think this song became as big as it could have been, esp with Cee Lo singing a hook
VV Brown - Children ft. Chiddy BangQ: This song sounds goofy at first but really can get stuck in your head because of the ice cream truck sample
Tennis - Origins
Coldplay - Princess of China ft RihannaQ: This song is an example of the blurring line between rock and pop music. As soon as I heard it, I knew it would be a single
Rye Rye - Never Will Be Mine ft RobynQ: Released over the past summer, here’s another song that I think didn’t get enough recognition. Rye Rye is a fresh talent to watch out for
Cults - You Know What I mean
Florence + The Machine - Take Care (Drake Cover)Q: A cover of a cover. Confused? This song was originally a song by Gil Scott Heron/Jamie XX that Drake basically covers. I do like Flo’s take on the song
Sharon Van Etten - Serpants
The Jane Doze - The Ones That Got Away (Richard Marx + Katy Perry remix)Q: Richard Marx covered the original song by Katy and the girls of the Jane Doze remixes into a pretty cool duet
